OFS enhances prepress processes with new S-DLE machine investment

It is commonly known that the speed and quality of banknote printing hinge on intaglio plate making. Moreover, this is the only security printing process not available for commercial printers, making it unique in deterring counterfeiting.

With the S-DLE® – Steel Direct Laser Engraving, it is possible to produce directly engraved intaglio printing plates without using any environmentally dangerous chemical process or materials. At the same time, the durability of the plates exceeds the industry’s expectations. S-DLE is an engraving process providing full 3D control over the engraving process including all kind of line-profiling, multilevel engraving, and precise control of fine-line structures. The calibration and checks are fully automated. This machine stands out due to its exceptional engraving process and the diverse base materials it can handle. It efficiently engraves brass for producing master plates and can also directly engrave steel with precision.

OFS happy to welcome the innovative Steel Direct Laser Engraving (S-DLE) technique for our intaglio plate production. The technique is developed by Jura and the Austrian Banknote Printing Works (OeBS). Using S-DLE in our workflow enhances the precision of our products. This eco-friendly process eliminates the need for harmful chemicals traditionally used in plate making, which aligns with our ongoing sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the durability of S-DLE plates has been proven through rigorous production tests, ensuring exceptional performance with no visible wear, even after extensive use.

This cutting-edge technology combines precision, sustainability, and durability, setting a new benchmark in intaglio printing. By enhancing our technology portfolio, we reinforce our dedication to upholding the highest standards of precision, durability, and sustainability in security printing.

FUN FACT:

The DLE technique was developed as a result of a collaboration between Jura and the Austrian Banknote Printing Works (OeBS) in early 2000s. At the time, our current Director of Innovation, Dr. Daniel Schwarzbach, was the Director R&D of OeBS and Thomas Scholler, our current Head of Operations, was then the Managing Director of JURA. The two pioneers were a vital part of the team which started developing the technique about 20 years ago. Now, over 20 years later, both gentlemen are eager to see the idea that sparked 20 years ago come to life in the OFS production.

The OFS and JURA teams gathered at our production site in Zurich to celebrate the successful partnership.
