JAGUAR: Authentication in your pocket

Digitalization is a buzzword that has been shaping industries for over 40 years, fundamentally transforming products and business models. In the security printing industry, this transformation is particularly relevant as smartphones become dominant tools for interaction and authentication. Ignoring digitalization is not an option, and the security printing industry must explore ways to integrate digital solutions into traditional practices. Among the various possible responses, digital security features provide an innovative way to connect high-security printing with the digital world.

Digital security features refer to physical features on banknotes or security documents that can be authenticated using a smart device application without requiring any changes to the physical printing process. These features leverage advanced technology to provide an additional layer of security and authentication.

To illustrate the variety and capabilities of digital security features, Orell Füssli Security Printing and Koenig & Bauer Vision and Protection introduced in March 2025 the Cypher Evo House Note. This banknote integrates both traditional security elements and multiple digital security features. Users can scan the note using a smartphone application to authenticate its validity, offering a hands-on demonstration of digital security in banknotes.

One of the key advantages of digital security features is their seamless integration. There is no need for additional investments in plate-making equipment or printing presses. These features can be implemented using standard inks and existing printing technology, ensuring a cost-effective transition.

Unlike traditional security features that remain static once a banknote is issued, digital security features provide flexibility. For instance, authentication criteria can be updated dynamically based on emerging threats. Features can remain dormant until activated, ensuring adaptability over time.

JAGUAR Security Feature

One of the security features of the CYPHER EVO banknote is JAGUAR. JAGUAR is a next-generation digital security feature designed for banknotes. It is created using offset security printing and standard inks, allowing for authentication through a smartphone application. At the core of this feature is the patented Secure Graphic technology, an invention by Scantrust SA, which has been enhanced and extended for use in high-security documents.

This discreet yet powerful element is embedded within the banknote. It is analyzed by a trained AI algorithm that takes into account the print degradations that occur during any counterfeit attempts to determine authenticity. In addition to the secure graphic hidden within the banknote's design, there are also orientation design elements placed around the secure graphic to facilitate the digital authentication process, directing attention to a specific focus within the design. These orientation design elements can take on various individual shapes.

The “JAGUAR” app analyzes the designs using deep learning and machine learning algorithms in two automated steps. In the first step, the app identifies the orientation design elements present in the banknote. In the second step, it examines the secure graphic located in the center of these design elements, assessing the quality of the calibrated imprint from the security printer. Since counterfeit prints undergo an additional printing cycle, the secure graphic in these copies contains less information compared to the original prints. This allows for reliable detection of counterfeit copies with a simple smartphone scan.

Benefits of Security Features

Beyond security, digital features enhance public engagement, particularly among younger generations. By integrating smartphone authentication, central banks can increase awareness and interaction with physical banknotes and so reinforcing trust in cash.

From a citizen’s perspective, digital security features provide an intuitive and accessible way to verify banknotes. No expert knowledge or specialized equipment is required—only a smartphone application. This democratization of authentication strengthens confidence in the integrity of physical currency.

Digital security features add a versatile and flexible security layer to banknotes, combining traditional high-security printing technologies with digital advancements. This approach ensures enhanced security while maintaining the integrity of physical cash.

As industry leaders, we encourage stakeholders to leverage the computing power, network connectivity, and advanced camera capabilities of smartphones to authenticate banknotes.
